    The Sexual Assault Center is the only organization in Saginaw County providing comprehensive services exclusively for survivors and their loved one’s healing from the trauma of sexual violence. Their Masters Level clinicians offer help for a wide range of issues, including depression, hopelessness, anxiety, and shame.

    In addition to their expert counselors, their legal advocate supports families while they navigate the criminal justice system. Trained advocates provide emotional support and resources to victims immediately following an assault when exams are provided. The Sexual Assault Center also offers medical advocacy to victims needing support as they go through medical appointments.

    All services are completely free of charge.

    INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP COUNSELING

    Individual, family, and group counseling services are available to adults, adolescents, and children using play therapy, trauma resolution, behavior management, and education/skill building.

    Crisis services include 24-hour crisis line support services, sexual assault nurse examinations from the Sexual Assault Response Team, and victim advocacy support and information.

    LEGAL ADVOCACY

    Advocacy and guidance are provided to victims as they go through the legal process. We also provide referrals to community services.

    Underground Railroad (URR) provides support services to survivors of abuse, as well as secondary survivors of abuse. Individuals do not have to be residing in emergency shelter to access support services.

    Our confidential helpline operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, providing support and information to callers.

    We encourage you to call from a safe place.

    URR’s licensed therapists provide support to clients in the following ways:

    -Helping process trauma

    -Developing coping skills

    -Counseling for mental health

    -Setting achievable goals

     URR’s licensed therapy staff includes:

    Intimate Partner Violence Therapist works with survivors of intimate partner violence, stalking, or human trafficking and secondary survivors of intimate partner violence.

    Sexual Assault Therapist works with survivors of sexual assault or human sex trafficking and secondary survivors of sexual assault.

    Youth Therapist works with youth survivors of childhood intimate partner violence.

    URR offers the following support groups:

    Domestic Violence Women’s Support Group is offered for female adult survivors of domestic violence. Topics include defining abuse, patterns of abuse, safety planning, power and control, healing, self-esteem, and more.

    Sexual Assault Support Group is offered for adult survivors of sexual assault. Topics include understanding trauma, self-esteem, coping strategies, safety, healthy boundaries, and more.

    Parent Support Group is offered for non-offending parents who are adult survivors of abuse. Topics include the impact of abuse on children, self-care for parents, low-cost/no-cost activities for families, community resources for families, goal setting, and more.

    Children’s Support Group is offered for youth who have witnessed abuse. Topics include feelings, divorce, safety, self-esteem, peer pressure, and more.

    Developing Employment Skills Group is offered to help survivors of abuse learn resume development, interviewing techniques, where to look for employment, how to overcome barriers to employment, how to dress for success, and more.

    EMERGENCY SHELTER

    Underground Railroad provides emergency shelter to survivors of abuse. The safety of survivors is the primary concern in determining requests for emergency shelter. URR will never turn away a survivor in imminent danger.

    Survivor Support: Advocates provide education about the dynamics of sexual assault and assist with understanding responses to trauma. Advocates work to empower survivors to meet their goals.

    Sexual Assault Nurse Exam: We are available 24/7 to coordinate a Sexual Assault Nurse Exam (SANE) and to provide in-person advocacy. TAACC hosts a confidential SANE suite in Caro to provide the Thumb with a non-emergency room access point for services. TAACC staff can respond to Thumb Area hospitals to provide in-person support to sexual assault survivors.

    Non-Residential Services: Non-residential services help navigate the lasting effects survivors endure, whether involved in an abusive relationship or recovering from a previous sexual assault. Services include survivor support, safety planning, legal assistance, housing resources, and access to a support group.

    Safety Planning: A safety plan is an essential tool to help prepare survivors for any circumstance where they may encounter their abuser or while they are out in the community. Advocates are available to work with survivors on the uniqueness of their situation.

    Legal Assistance: Advocates listen to survivors to understand their legal needs and offer appropriate referrals to community service providers. Upon request, legal accompaniment may be provided.

    Housing Support: Advocates will provide referrals to community resources for housing and assist with locating and securing safe and affordable housing.

    Support Groups: Support groups for survivors of sexual assault are available.
